Story of Cinnamon Stars

Cinnamon stars, otherwise called as Zimtsterne cookies form a major part of the tradition of Christmas. This is a cookie that is served with great pride to the quests. The combination of almonds and cinnamon is a perfect blend of taste. It is made every time as a star with 6 points. It is a Christmas special recipe because cinnamon was much expensive as well as rare to be found in Europe during 1600s. Almonds were also imported to Europe, making it a food item just for the royalty. It is only during such festivals that the commoners could afford to spend so much on a dish. Why the dish got star shape is not known, we can assume that may be it is made during Christmas which has given it the star shape. Digging to the stories and knowing more about the dish is always amazing.

This cookie has got very few ingredients and are also easily available. Be prepared to the fact that it is indeed an expensive dish but it is worth trying.

Egg whites – 2

Lemon Juice – ½ teaspoon

Procedure to Make Cinnamon Stars

Cinnamon stars forms an authenticate German dish is not very easy to prepare with the proper shape. You may find it hard in your first attempt of preparing it to get that shape but messing up with things in the earlier stage can make you perfect by putting adequate efforts.

Step 1: Beat egg whites with great speed that it turns foamy and then add some lemon juice to that. You should keep on beating it until you find peaks of medium stiffness.

Step 2: Keep on beating and add cinnamon as well as sugar to it gradually so that you get a stiff peak which is glossy.

Step 3: You should know remove about half cup of this mixture to a smaller bowl and can set that aside. If you are planning to bake cookies same day, you can keep it open at room temperature or else can cover that tightly using plastic and can store inside your refrigerator.

Step 4: Add almond meals to the eggs which are left in the bowl and mix that well for making soft dough. You should then refrigerate the dough for an hour.

Step 5: Preheat the oven to about 275 F

Step 4: Take a parchment paper and then sprinkle powdered sugar to that and then add dough to the same. You should again sprinkle more sugar to dough and cover that with another sheet. You can at that gently to 1/3 inch of thickness. You can then cut that to stars. The excess dough that is available around stars. The paper can then be lifted onto the baking sheet.

Step 7: You should then transfer greased cookie sheets and then glaze that with meringue which you have made in the step 2. You can garnish this using slivered almonds if you really like that.

Step 8: You can bake this for 30 minutes so that you can find the meringue on the top of the cookies are set but make sure that they are still white.

Step 9: Once when the dish is ready, you can cool that completely and then store that in some airtight containers.

Cinnamon stars are inevitable for the Christmas time and they just add to the merry of the time. Getting to eat such a lovely dish at any point of the year can make you feel awesome. Trying out and being successful with such a great dish can make anyone feel satisfied.
